In memory of Ragnar

INTRODUCTION

…October 31, 1910, my father was born in Freiburg Breisgau. I want to dedicate this post to him. A post that I later will make a page with. Many photos are taken from an album that Ragnar himself created and added handwritten comments too. Much of what I know about Ragnar was taken from these photos.

He died 1994 in Vienna.

I remember Ragnar as a smiling and loving and funny father, who took great care of his family and friends.

He did not only care of his family.
He took care of the employees who worked for him and the RIV SKF administration.
I went once to his office in Torino (see photo with the white building white below in Section 4 ).  The  office entrance employees told me that they admired my father because of his kind and caring behavior.

In his diary, Ragnar wrote a lot about his sons and their childhood.
Back in the 50s, he took notes about things m3 and my brothers, said. Thanks to Ragnar and his notes and memories, I know that my way of playing with words, already started when I was a small boy.

I remember especially the Christmas Eves that he always organized in a very special manner:

At a certain time I heard a knock on the door. My father disappeared. I knew that he went away to meet father Christmas. After some 5 minutes, he came back with a huge Jute sack on his back, filled with gifts. He had great fantasy.

He loved to Joke like here somewhere on a vacation in Italy.

With love wherever you are.

Section 1 – Birth and studies

… As written in the introduction, Ragnar was born in Freiburg 31/10 1910. He and his parents left Freiburg at the start of the first world war 1914 and with his mother moved to Sweden while his father went to  Prague.

He grew up and studied in Sweden together with his sir Astrid and Ingrid.
(Memory “Återblick 10” ). After Swedish high school he went to Prague were he studied to become a civil engineer, studies he ended 1934.

They lived in a nice apartment on the second floor in this building just on the east side of the Prague river.

Ragnar never learned Czech like her sister Astrid. This was because at high school and University, the main language before the 2018 Russian revolution, was German.

Section 3 to Sweden

Short after D.day, Ragnar  with his wife Karin (born Medin) and his one year old son, took the last flight to Sweden1944….

He had his office on the second floor in Gamlestand in Göteborg. I visited him a few times there as a small boy.

He got in love with and married Signe Geiges late 40s.

They went among others to Freiburg, where they both were born.

Section 4

– Italy

15/ 1964 Ragnar moved with his wife and my mother to Torino where they lived in an apartment in Corso Cairoli near the RIV-SKF office (the white building )

When Luciano Giulietti left, Ragnar took over as  Italian RIV SKF CTO ( chief technology officer ) June 1967 with office on  the second last floor in via Cairoli.
A curiosity.
RIV was the name of the Italian roller ball industry. On the top of the main office white building was to read RIV-SKF  which in Swedish means “Rip SKF”. That they choosed to call it RIV-SKF instead of SKF RIV” was probably a typical Swedish Göteborg humor on behalf of the Swedish administration.

I never thought about this funny name, when I lived in Italy as I probably thought Italian way.

…AS CTO he had to attend several technical conferences, in among others Göteborg.

He had his office on the second upper floor in Corso Cairoli, the white building in  Torino in the river photo above.

As CTO, he attended several conferences. Among others Budapest 1967

and June 1968 in Göteborg

and several times in Frankfurt among others1968-06. My father told me often  like “Tomorrow, I go to Frankfurt”

He also went to Tokyo, Japan for an ISO conference.

Bangkok was also visited probably on the way to Tokyo. He loved traveling.

He visited a ball bearing factory in  Moscow and Karkov, Russia, 1969-1009.

The were invited to visit Volgograd.

Torino home

Ragnar lived with his wife Signe and their son in a nice apartment with terrace and view over Torino and the Alps surrounding Torino.

Spare time

But the Italian stay was not only work.
He went sometimes to Sweden to visit his sisters.

Some weekends he went to Chamonix near Mont Blanc to relax.

During Christmas and Easter vacations, we went skiing, living in an apartment we rented in Borgata Sestriere.

August vacations

We had nice vacations among others in Arenzano near Genova

Sabaudia, (south of Rome and Latina)

Fun on the beach with Mount Circeo in the background.

View from Terracina south of Sabaudia.

and from 1965 on Lipari the Aeolianisland we came to with Boat from Neaple.

America line boat in Neaple.

On Lipari, Ragnar and Signe bought 1967 a ruin and rebuilt it to become a nice summer vacation home.

Section 5 Austria

… After being retired 1973 and separating from Signe Geiges in Italy, Ragnar married Eva Chiari and they lived together in Austria.

They lived in Hofburg, Vienna but…

they went several times to Mariapfarr.

His retirement passion in their Hofburg apartment was to build model Märklin mini version railway.
